Risks of wearing flat shoes
By Amina Abdul Salam
Many women prefer wearing flat shoes to avoid pains in the feet or back, but recent studies have shown that although there is a widespread wearing of this kind of shoe among women, most of them have back pains.
Dr Ali Mahmoud, Orthopaedic Consultant, says that this type of shoe puts a pressure on the spine and cartilages, causing severe pain. Many studies have given high heels such a bad reputation that many people think that flat shoes are always a better alternative.
However, a good pair of heels with healthy supports can serve the woman far better than a poorly made pair of flats. Dr Mahmoud recommended that the best solution in this domain is to wear medium-heeled shoes, with the height of the heel being three to five cm. He said that flat shoes without an arch support can cause lower back and ankle pain.
